Where the Private Car Beats the Coach
The arithmetic
A $300 group rate reads expensive next to a $121.88 coach seat until you count heads. Two people pay $150 each and the coach wins. Three pay $100 each and it is close. Four pay $75 each, five pay $60, and the private car is cheaper than a seat on a bus with 48 strangers.
Against the per-person private options the gap is wider still. Four people on the customizable private day cost $550.36; the same four in the car cost $300.
The car does not include entry tickets, so add the Skytree at ¥1,800 a head if you want the deck. Even then a family of four comes out ahead.

What the car buys beyond the price
Hotel pickup and drop-off, for a start, which removes the 7:20 trek to Ginza with a suitcase of jet lag. Then the route: you can drop a stop that bores you and spend the hour somewhere else, which no coach allows.
The vehicle is an Alphard or Vellfire with air conditioning, and fuel and highway tolls are covered. Groups larger than six can be accommodated at extra cost.
Drivers wait up to 60 minutes past the scheduled pickup, and the operator asks you to be in the lobby ten minutes early. Pickup does not extend to airports or ports; that costs extra and needs arranging in advance.

Private guides charge for their time, not your tickets
This is the single thing that surprises people booking a private tour in Japan. The listing price buys the guide's hours. Everything else is yours.

Take the car if
You are four or five people, someone in the group tires easily, or you are staying somewhere the trains make awkward. It also suits a first day after a long flight: you sit down at the hotel door and stand up at the shrine.
